The
man who inspired the founding of Flicko’s Video Workshops has
enjoyed a lifelong love affair with filmmaking going back nearly
70 years ago in his native Austria.
Actually,
Gustav Flicko’s date with destiny began before he could even
pick up a camera.
You
see, when Gustav was 3, his adoring parents bought an 8mm-film
camera to record his every precious movement. Gustav had come
along late in their lives, and the couple didn’t want to miss
a moment. They built up quite a large archive of footage of
their only child—playing in the snow outside their modest
cabin, or helping to tend the goats and cattle that made up
their livelihood.
By
the time he turned 7, Gustav was pretty handy with the camera.
Under the watchful eye of his doting parents, he recorded the
beautiful nature scenes in and around the cabin nestled at the
foot of the Austrian Alps.
As
a teen-ager, he began to edit his own films and served as the
projectionist for his school. When he and his family moved to
the United States in 1953, they passed through Ellis Island in
New York, America’s famous point of entry for millions of
immigrants, bent on a better life in America.
The
family moved to Louisville to live close to relatives. Gustav
(“Goose” to his friends) entered the University of
Louisville to study. One day, he hoped that he could work on the
technical side of filmmaking for a Hollywood film crew.
But
fate had other things in store for Gustav.
His
aging parents fell ill and he devoted himself to their care. In
1965, he married his sweetheart from Owensboro. He is now a
doting grandfather, and has the miles of film, video and DVD to
prove it!
Gustav’s
dream was to help others put their dream videos and DVDs
together for the enjoyment of their loved ones. That’s the
driving force behind our business. Visit us soon. You’ll see
for yourself!
